Planning Minister Carl Sargeant has given the go-ahead for a ‘mega-dairy’ to be built at Leighton, near Welshpool in Powys.
Following a public inquiry after Powys County Council’s decision to refuse planning, the Welsh Assembly Government has approved Farmer Fraser Jones’s 1000-cow dairy plan which will be built next to a village primary school.
Leighton Primary School Chair of Governers had said “After reading a lot of research, from the US and Europe, there is scientific evidence to suggest it’s dangerous and harmful to children. As far as the Welsh government is concerned, there are no regulations for this type of dairy farm. We are going into the unknown. The school’s head teacher is convinced that the school will close if the dairy goes ahead because parents will move their children. The knock-on effect would be the closure of the village hall.”
